One of the most exciting experiences during nature walks in lush cloud forest is to suddenly find yourself surrounded by a feeding flock of birds. These feeding flocks are also known as mixed-species foraging flocks, and they are great opportunities to find a wide range of local avian denizens. At first, you may notice a pair of birds fly into a nearby tree, or abundant chirping at a distance. If the feeding flock is the real thing, in no time dozens of birds will fill the trees around you.
For birdwatchers that have never birded in the Neotropics before, feeding flocks are a dream come true. Their distinction from regular flocks of other places is that they're made up of all sorts of species, not only individuals of one species in particular.
