It’s one thing to glimpse the mega-diverse flora, fauna, and beauty of the Andean tropical forest outside Quito, Ecuador; it’s another to understand and appreciate what you’ll see. Mashpi Lodge, set amid 6,177 acres of cloud forest in the Mashpi Biodiversity Reserve, assures that guests can do both with its interactive Mashpi Laboratory, which opened in July 2017.
Located right onsite, just steps from the main Lodge, the laboratory offers an opportunity for guests to interact with and learn from Mashpi’s resident biologist and guides. The interior space of the laboratory, stretching 65 square feet within a glass structure, is arrayed with myriad exhibits such as amphibian and reptile terrariums and pinned insects, including flamboyantly colored butterflies, bees, and bugs.

As innovative as the LodgeLodge itself, the remarkable thing about the Mashpi Lab is that, in addition to being a functioning scientific facility, it is a showroom, museum, and hands-on biology classroom with a critical mission. Through interactive exhibits, visitors can learn about the importance of conservation efforts in preserving this endangered environment, view taxidermy specimens, and explore the fascinating wildlife that inhabits the rainforest. In addition to its educational aspects, Mashpi Lodge Laboratory offers a wide range of fun activities for all ages.
From guided hikes through the lush rainforest to night walks and observing nocturnal creatures, there is something for everyone. This experience will give visitors a deeper appreciation for nature. The laboratory also offers a stereomicroscope with two eyepieces—much more manageable for young eyes to examine things up close.
Guests can lend a hand with the Lodge’s ongoing camera trap project and learn about microphotography in the Mashpi Laboratory’s studio. Conservation work is also available for those interested in learning, with opportunities to assist in identifying and documenting insects’ color, size, and other characteristics.
