Sin duda alguna una de las tantas cosas que tiene Mashpi Lodge, que me encanta y me enamora cada día son las aves. Me gusta mucho escuchar y ver a estas especies mientras estoy trabajando en el laboratorio, en campo o en donde me encuentre, ya que es ahí donde uno se da cuenta de lo hermosa que es la naturaleza. Todo se combina en formas, sonidos, colores y otros factores que atraen mucho a turistas amantes del aviturismo.

Mashpi al ser un lugar privilegiado dentro del bosque del Chocó alberga alrededor de 400 especies en diferentes hábitats y estratos, registradas como endémicas aproximadamente 35; todas muy llamativas, hermosas y únicas. En este paraíso natural se pueden apreciar especies muy comunes y fáciles de avistar como tangaras, eufonías, tucanes, pájaros carpinteros, colibríes, trogones, búhos y aves rapaces.

However, as well as the easy and common species that enhance bird-tourism, Mashpi is also inhabited by some very rare and difficult-to-spot birds, contributing to its unique bird-tourism appeal. Among these is the banded ground-cuckoo, endemic to the Chocó region and threatened due to deforestation, a problem that today affects many species of flora and fauna crucial for bird-tourism. Another very rare bird to see, which adds a special allure for bird-tourism enthusiasts, is the umbrella bird. This species is also vulnerable, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, due to the destruction of its habitat and the pressure of hunting. So rare is this species that many aspects of its evolution and ecology remain unknown, making it a significant point of interest for bird-tourism.

Personally, the bird that most catches my eye, enhancing the bird-tourism experience at Mashpi, is the Chocó toucan, which is also endemic to this privileged zone. Apart from being large and striking, a real treasure for bird-tourism, this species has a unique song that is unmistakeable when you hear it in the forest. It incites a feeling of peace and contentment in those visiting the reserve, underscoring the importance of bird-tourism in connecting people with nature’s wonders.

Esto ha hecho que la reserva de Mashpi gracias a sus guías naturalistas, su biodiversidad y su ubicación geográfica, vaya creciendo cada vez más en esta actividad.

He sido testigo en ver como a diario, numerosos grupos amantes del aviturismo llegan a este maravilloso lugar de diferentes partes del mundo, demostrando interés en conocer la riqueza de Mashpi Lodge’s, del Ecuador; motivando así a aprender y sensibilizar en la importancia que tiene la conservación hoy en día.
